Ray Singer is a British music producer, composer and now runs Singer Records.
As a songwriter Ray had success with French artistes Francoise Hardy and Michel Polnareff. Whilst in Paris he discovered British busker Peter Sarstedt and went on to record many hits with him, including Where Do You Go To, My Lovely, I Am A Cathedral, Frozen Orange Juice etc.
In partnership with manager Simon Napier-Bell, Ray recorded for RCA and ABC records in New York. He worked with the nucleus of the Average White Band, including lead singer and writer Alan Gorrie, as well as musicians Chris Spedding, Jim Gordon and Herbie Flowers. Ray moved to London and worked for Chris Blackwell's Island Records and also produced acts for EMI (The Scaffold), Ariola (Japan, Child) and Decca (Robin Sarstedt). Ray produced the first albums of London group Japan and worked closely with their lead singer and writer David Sylvian.He went on to work with other singer/songwriters including Joan Armatrading, Leana Lovich and recently Ana Silvera.
Working with movie composer Michael Storey, Ray produced over one hundred TV commercials, including the groundbreaking Levi's and Guinness commercials featuring actor Rutger Hauer. The partnership went on to score for the Cannes nominated, British movie Another Country starring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth and in Hollywood with, Waiting for the Light, starring Shirley MacLaine and Teri Garr. Television soundtracks followed, including the acclaimed BBC adaption of John le Carré's A Perfect Spy, Anthony Horowitz's The Gift and South by South-East and the Lynda La Plante series Civvies , which won the Ivor Novello Award for best music.
Ray has recently set up his own studios in London. The success of the Wes Anderson movie, The Darjeeling Limited, with Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Anjelica Huston, which features "Where Do You Go To, My Lovely", led to Singer Records releasing The Lost Album and Restless Heart by Peter Sarstedt, which have both become i-Tunes best sellers. Other artists featured on Singer Records are Suggs from Madness, Toyah Willcox and Imaani from Incognito. He has recently co-produced singer-songwriter Ana Silvera's album 'The Aviary', alongside Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson.)
